Eye Candy
The first PG movie by The Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix, Bound) is the adaptation of the 1960s anime series Speed Racer, about a futuristic racecar driver (Emile Hirsch: Lords of Dogtown, Into the Wild), his girlfriend Trixie (Christina Ricci: Penelope, Buffalo '66), and the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox: Vantage Point, We Are Marshall). When an corrupt corporation tries to hire Speed, he has to race for the love of his sport, and his family, in dizzying, special effects action sequences. Also starring John Goodman (The Big Lebowski, Mother Night).
Mike Myers' (Austin Powers, Wayne's World) newest comedy is The Love Guru, where he plays the #2 Guru in America, who sees a way to get on Oprah and become number one when Jessica Alba (Good Luck Chuck, The Eye) hires him to help a star hockey player (Romany Malco: Weeds, Baby Mama) who's lost his edge. Myers brings his trademark humor to the film, filled with double entendre, silly names, and winks at the camera.
Our only documentary this week is Young @ Heart, about the Young at Heart Chorus, a group with the average age of 80 who perform contemporary rock and punk songs, and winner of the Heartland Truly Moving Picture Award. The film covers the performers personal lives, their reaction to the musical director's song choices, and their lives on stage.

Al Pacino (Dog Day Afternoon, Any Given Sunday) plays a forensic psychologist who becomes the target of a conspiracy in 88 Minutes. A serial killer he helped convict (Neal McDonough: Flags of our Fathers, Minority Report) seems to be setting up copycat killings, all of them casting doubt... as he begins to suspect his colleagues (Amy Brenneman: The Jane Austen Book Club, Heat) and students (Alicia Witt: Cecil B. Demented, The Upside of Anger, Leelee Sobieski: Joy Ride, Eyes Wide Shut), and the body count rises, and the killer has given him 88 minutes to live, a mystery begins to unravel.
Noise is the story of a Manhattan man (Tim Robbins: Code 46, The Shawshank Redemption) driven insane by the noise of the city... so much so, that he becomes "The Rectifier," a vigilante waging war on thoughtless noise. His crusade begins to attract the attention of the mayor (William Hurt: Body Heat, A History of Violence), and the vigilante side of his Rectifier mission takes on a new seriousness.
The Tai film The Bodyguard is a kinetic action picture that adapts the "bullet ballet" style of John Woo to a wire-fu, gravity defying extreme, and feature Tony Jaa (The Protector, Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior).
RomCom and Quirk
Patrick Dempsey (Can't Buy Me Love, Sweet Home Alabama) lives a charmed life as a wealthy ladies man in Made of Honor. When his best friend (Michelle Monaghan: Gone Baby Gone, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) gets engaged to Kevin McKidd (Dog Soldiers, Kingdom of Heaven), he suddenly realizes that his life of ease would be empty without her... and so he must win the heart of the woman he's been taking for granted for years.
When Lisa Kudrow (The Opposite of Sex, Happy Endings) has to return to work, her brother Salman moves in to look after her two boys. When Salman gets a job for a dot-com company as a mascot, he finds a new identity and confidence in his blue, mascot alter-ego in Kabluey.
Matthew Broderick (Wargames, Then She Found Me), as a habitual gambler and recovering alcoholic, travels to Vegas to reclaim his niece (Brittany Snow: Hairspray, Prom Night), who has taken a job as a prostitute in Finding Amanda. Las Vegas, however, might not be the best environment for him, and he might me more in need of rescue than his niece.
The new teen musical this week is Another Cinderella Story, the sequel to A Cinderella Story, who meets her prince in the new boy in school, falls in love at a costume party, and thwarts her stepmother and stepsisters.
The other new kids movie this week is a new animated Scooby Doo movie, Scooby Doo and the Goblin King.
Before the Rains is the newest Merchant Ivory film, about an Englishman (Linus Roache: Siam Sunset, Batman Begins) who falls in love with his housemaid (Jennifer Ehle: Sunshine, Alpha Male), only to have his life spin out of control when his wife returns home from a journey abroad.
Kate Beckinsale (Underworld, Van Helsing) and Sam Rockwell (Matchstick Men, Charlie's Angels) stars in Snow Angels, a drama about an awkward teenager who begins to explore his first romantic relationship, but is cautious, because he sees the failures of all the adult relationships around him.
Reckless Video's TV New Releases launches a number of new series' this week: we have the first seasons of the geek-turned-spy comedy Chuck, the supernatural quirk/fantasy Pushing Daisies, the wealthy family and idealistic lawyer mismatch Dirty Sexy Money, the medical drama by the creators of Grey's Anatomy Private Practice, as well as the first seasons of the Canadian police procedural Da Vinci's Inquest and the BBC neighborhood drama The Street. We also have season 2 of the Doctor Who sci-fi spinoff Torchwood, season 3 of both Criminal Minds and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and the Peter Cook and Dudley Moore collection Not Only... But Also.
