Hulk Smash
The newest superhero to reach DVD is The Incredible Hulk, starring Edward Norton (The Italian Job, Death to Smoochy) as Doctor Bruce Banner, who, after a dose of Gamma radiation, turns into the giant green Hulk when he gets angry. Chased out of his South American exile and pursued US government who want to use the Hulk as a weapon, Banner returns home to find a cure... but his past is there waiting for him, both in the woman he left behind (Liv Tyler: Reign Over Me, Stealing Beauty) and the General who's hunting him (William Hurt: Noise, Mr. Brooks). Knowing they can't stop the genetically enhanced Banner, the military makes their own experimental super-soldier (Tim Roth: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, Reservoir Dogs)... but if the soldier turns out to be an abomination, curing the Hulk could eliminate the only hope of stopping the mayhem. The new Hulk continues to flesh out the burgeoning Marvel universe on film, and even includes a cameo by Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, from Iron Man. On DVD and Blu-Ray.
Lock Your Doors
Bearing a strong resemblance to this year's French thriller Them, The Strangers is a home-invasion minded horror film coming out in time for this Halloween. A troubled couple (Liv Tyler: Armageddon, Jersey Girl and Scott Speedman: Dark Blue, Underworld) in an isolated summer home answer a late night knock at the door. They struggle to survive as their house is assaulted by mysterious Strangers, fighting against seldom-seen, masked attackers without knowing who they are, or what they want.
Comedy
Foot-Fist Way is a Will Ferrell comedy presented by Will Ferrell, about an incompetent Tae Kwon Do teacher (Danny McBride: Hot Rod, Drillbit Taylor) who, after a severe blow to his overstuffed ego, sets off to challenge his B-movie action star hero and restore his self esteem and his honor. A low budget comedy, the DVD cover includes Roger Ebert's quote: "Children should not be allowed within a mile of this film."
Drama
Gus Van Sant's (Drugstore Cowboy, To Die For) Paranoid Park continues the esteemed filmmaker's trend of using a cast including many unknowns, often without acting backgrounds, to create more realistic (and less stagey) atmospheres on film. Paranoid Park follows a confused skateboarder as he fills in the details of the mysterious death of a rail yard security guard.
4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days is a film about two college roommates as they finalize arrangements for an illegal abortion in communist Romania. Taking place in one 24-hour period, the two women find themselves more and more embroiled in a tense and threatening situation. Starring Annamaria Marincca (Youth Without Youth) and Laura Vasiliu, 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days received wide critical acclaim, called the #1 film of the year by the New York Times, and currently ranking 97% on Rottentomatoes.com.
Lower Key
Matthew Perry (Friends, Numb) tries to keep his irrepressible family under control in Birds of America, including his depressed, homeless brother (Ben Foster: 3:10 to Yuma, The Punisher), his promiscuous sister (Ginnifer Goodwin: Walk the Line, Mona Lisa Smile), and his wife
(Lauren Graham: Bad Santa, The Gilmore Girls) who has put off having children until their hard work pays off. When his life starts to unravel, he realizes that he might not have to be so controlling trying to take care of his family, and if things go wrong, they could be able to take care of him.
A straight laced kid (Lou Taylor Pucci: Thumbsucker, Southland Tales) steals a car to find his estranged brother in The Go-Getter. When the car's owner (Zooey Deschanel: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, All the Real Girls) catches up with him, the road trip takes one odd turn after another, including meeting up with Jena Malone (Saved!, Donnie Darko), and a slew of his brother's old friends.
Non-Fiction
Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma) presents the documentary Small Town Gay Bar, a film about gay bars in the conservative Bible Belt and what they mean to their patrons and their communities. Smith has also released his third An Evening with Kevin Smith DVD, Sold Out: A Threevening with Kevin Smith, where the director's speaking tour relates tales of filmmaking, celebrity, and working with Bruce Willis on Live Free or Die Hard.
The Mindscape of Alan Moore is a documentary about the creator of The Watchmen and V for Vendetta, covering his development as an artist from childhood to his work on some of the most respected graphic novels of all time.
Ben Stein (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Honeymoon in Vegas) hosts Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, promoting intelligent design, which has been maligned by science.
The new cartoons in New Releases this week include the 50 year anniversary of the Disney classic Sleeping Beauty, available on DVD and Blu-Ray. We also have the newest Veggie Tales movie, The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything.
New to Reckless Video's TV New Release section this week is the second season of Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock. We also have two new Saturday Night Live discs, The Best of Alec Baldwin and The Best of Tracy Morgan, now both cast members of 30 Rock. Last, the newest Michael Palin travelogue to arrive at Reckless Video is his 3-disc Full Circle.
