Vegas, Baby
About to be married, Doug (Justin Bartha) joins up with with his two best friends, the suave Bradley Cooper and the uptight Ed Helms, along with his slightly unstable brother-in-law-to be (Zach Galifianakis), and the four of them head off to Las Vegas for a night to remember... except that not only can they not remember the night, the three members of the groom's party can't find Doug. In The Hangover, the remaining trio tries to piece together the missing night and find their friend, ending up on an incredible journey through Vegas, uncovering clues in all of the things they seem to have acquired during the night: a tiger, a stolen police car, an unclaimed baby, and a missing tooth.
As their Vegas trip gets even wilder, they somehow have to find Doug and get him to his wedding on time, while avoiding the gangsters they don't remember offending. With Heather Graham. On DVD and Blu Ray.
A Whole Different WWII
Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds takes place in a strange, cinematic alternate reality of France and Germany in the 1940s, cascading the stories of Christoph Waltz's insidiously charming Nazi "Jew Hunter," Brad Pitt's group of American commandos (the titular Basterds) terrorizing Nazis behind enemy lines, and Melanie Laurent's lone survivor of the massacre of her family. The stories intercut and interconnect until all three groups arrive in a French cinema, and together, can completely change the course of the war. Arguably Tarantino's most mature film, Inglourious Basterds marries incredibly well constructed dialogue and intricate character moments with bursts of shocking violence, combined with beautiful imagery of rural and urban France. With Diane Kruger and Eli Roth. On DVD and Blu-Ray.
Hello, Kiddies
Though they slouched unceremoniously into the TV New Release section, I have been absolutely giddy about Reckless bringing in the complete series of HBO's pulp/horror show Tales From The Crypt.
It's probably fair to say that there's never been a show like this before or since: many of the stories are taken directly from the 1950s Tales From The Crypt comics, each one with different characters, actors, and directors... but each episode stands alone, usually blending gratuitous, over the top graphics with wry comedy, and often an O Henry ironic twist.
These episodes are great, quick, self contained stories, and because it's a DVD, you can skip past the Crypt Keeper's painful puns (the best feature imaginable!)
Small Town Festivals
Taking Woodstock is the newest release from director Ang Lee, which tells the story of the 1969 music festival from the perspective of Elliot Tiber (comedian Demetri Martin), whose family owned the local motel that became the staging base for the people running the festival. While the influx of people helps his parents (Imelda Staunton and Henry Goodman), it makes him a controversial figure in his quiet community, and the new perspectives brought by the festival start to have a personal effect on Elliot. Lee uses the split screen effects featured in the Woodstock documentary and recalls the transfomative time in Elliot's, and America's development. With Emile Hirsch and Liev Schreiber.
Man on a Mission
Once again traveling to Europe to reclaim his family and punish all involved, The Other Man sends Liam Neeson on a much more emotional and personal journey than the action-oriented Taken. Tracking down his wife (Laura Linney), who had a secret life with another man (Antonio Banderas), he winds up in Milan. The two men bond over games of chess and conversation, while Neeson keeps his identity a secret, seething under the surface, and the secrets between all three of them come to light over time.
Kids
The talking guinea pigs of G-Force are on a mission to stop Bill Nighy's evil schemes, but when they gather intelligence illegally, and the information seems to be useless, the FBI wants the guinea pigs destroyed. Now Darwin (Sam Rockwell), the lead guinea pig, has to save his team and stop the villain and clear their names, which will be even harder with the FBI out to bring back the animals, dead or alive. G-Force has an ensemble cast, with Will Arnett, Jon Favreau, Zach Galifianakis, and Nicolas Cage. On DVD and Blu-Ray.
New this week to Reckless Video's TV New Releases are the 3rd season of HBO's historical drama The Tudors, as well as the 4th season of Adult Swim's stop-motion sketch show Robot Chicken, and the 3rd season of the BBC office comedy The IT Crowd.
