May
8 Bit Cinema and Ghosts in the Machine
The $2 Monthly Special for May is video games... a trend in movies that has taken off over the last decade. Every year theaters have a handful of movies based on popular video games (such as Hitman and the third Resident Evil film, both currently on in our New Release section), founded by movies based on Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and even Super Mario Bros, which put the legendary Bob Hoskins into Mario's red and blue overalls. As games become more and more cinematic, they give rise to more atmospheric and complicated films, such as the fantasy/horror Silent Hill or the action/scifi Final Fantasy.
Before games had achieved narratives and characters from which movies could be derived, video and computer games have been used in films, from Tron's life-inside-the-game plotline (which continues to be developed today in movies like David Cronenberg's eXistenZ or the family-friendly Spy Kids 3: Game Over) or the computer that can't tell real violence from simulations in Wargames. Even gaming culture has become cinematic, allowing movies like Grandma's Boy to center on game testers, or the suspense thriller Brainscan, about the gamers looking for the newest, coolest games.
Much like the explosion of comic book and graphic novel based pictures, video games look like they'll be part of the movies for a long time to come, and this month, they're only two dollars in Reckless Video's $2 Monthly Special.
