Though the new vogue is to adapt movies from video games, Hollywood's tradition of importing stories and characters goes back much further... and they still mine television for ideas.
While these adaptations can sometimes result in the kinds of films that would populate our (long since disbanded) Craptacular section, some of the movies adapted from television shows have become critically acclaimed reworkings, like Michael Mann's Miami Vice, or modern dissections of popular culture, like the very meta Brady Bunch Movie.
It's also fair to remember that movies like Wayne's World and Goodburger were adapted from comedy sketch shows, making moviestars of the sketch's characters. Titles like Mission Impossible have gone on to be movie franchises, and Star Trek's legacy exists almost as prominently on film as it does on television.
Then there are movies like Serenity, director/creator Joss Whedon's push to continue the story of his quickly cancelled Firefly series, or Matt Groening's big-screen extent ion of his own show The Simpsons, and X-Files: Fight the Future, which extends the series story between Seasons 5 and 6.
